Nepal Flood 2026

On 26 August 2026, a devastating flood struck the Rasuwa district of Nepal near the Nepal–China border. The disaster began after a large mass of ice and rock collapsed in the high Himalayas, creating a huge flood that travelled through the Lhende Khola, Bhote Koshi, and Trishuli river systems. The exact cause and mechanism are still being studied, so it is better not to say that it was definitely caused by a GLOF.

The flood severely affected areas such as Rasuwagadhi, Timure, Syabrubesi, Betrawati, and other places along the Trishuli River. It destroyed houses, bridges, roads, markets, hydropower projects, and other infrastructure. Several hydropower projects were badly damaged.

The disaster caused a huge loss of life, and thousands of people were reported missing. As rescue and search operations continued, the numbers changed rapidly. Recent reports have put the number of deaths in Nepal at more than 1,300, with more than 5,000 people missing.

This was one of the most devastating natural disasters to affect Nepal in recent years. Rescue teams, security forces, volunteers, and international teams worked together to search for missing people and provide help to affected communities.
