Buddha and Buddha Jayanti
Gautama Buddha was born in 623 BC according to traditional beliefs, although many historians believe he was born around the 6th century BC. He was born in Lumbini, Nepal. He was born to Queen Maya Devi and King Suddhodana.
When Buddha was born, his mother was traveling to her parents’ home in Devdaha. After a few days of his birth, his mother passed away, and he was raised by his aunt and stepmother, Mahapajapati Gotami.
Legend says that Buddha walked immediately after he was born. Later, he married Yashodhara and had a son named Rahula.
Prince Siddhartha lived a comfortable life inside the palace. When he went outside, he saw an old man, a sick man, a dead man, and a holy man. These sights made him think deeply about life and suffering.
One night, he left his palace in search of truth and enlightenment. He practiced severe fasting and meditation for six years, but he realized that extreme suffering was not the answer. Finally, he meditated under the Bodhi Tree and attained enlightenment. After that, he became known as Buddha, which means “the Enlightened One.”
Buddha began teaching his ideas in India. His teachings later spread to many countries across Asia, including China, Japan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. Buddhism was formed from his teachings.
Buddha Jayanti is celebrated to honor the birth, enlightenment, and death of Buddha. It is an important festival for Buddhists around the world.
