LESSONS IN THE BOOK:
In ‘THE ARCHER’, we are introduced to Tetsuya, a once-renowned master of archery who has withdrawn from fame and now lives a quiet life away from public recognition. One day, a young curious archer comes to the village in search of him and ends up finding him in a carpentry shop doing furniture work instead of archery. The boy asks plenty of questions to Tetsuya about his current situation. In response, Tetsuya leads the visitor, along with a village boy who had introduced them towards the mountains; a journey that takes nearly an hour to complete. They reached a large crevice between two rocks which flowed a rushing river which could be crossed only by the means of a bridge. Camly, Tetsuya walked to the middle of the bridge which swayed ominously and bowed to something on the other side but when it was the visitor’s turn, he refused and ran away. After, while returning back to village the surprised villager boy asked Tetsuya about his knowledge of archery and Tetsuya also agreed to present the symbolic elements of the bow, arrow and target.
In ‘The Archer’, Tetsuya’s teachings are conveyed through the symbolic elements of the bow, arrow and target, each embodying a philosophy of life. The novel does not describe the art of physical archery but transforms it into a spiritual discipline that imitates human intention, action and destiny. Through short but meaningful explanations, Coelho illustrates that mastering the bow directly influences mastering yourself. Firstly, the concept of Allies highlights the importance of surrounding ourselves with individuals who foster growth rather than perfection. Tetsuya also explains that no companion is perfect and every one must collect the insights from both strengths and weaknesses of others. Secondly, ‘THE BOW’ chapter symbolizes life itself. Gripping the bow correctly denotes balance, patience and control. The chapter also symbolizes that forcing someone to do something can result in failure, whereas steady focus enables a person to act with clarity. Therefore, intention must be directed with discipline and focus.
Furthermore, ‘THE ARROW’chapter shows the intention and commitment. One released, it cannot be retrieved like many words and actions that cannot be undone. Simultaneously, one must be determined in their purpose before proceeding. The chapter creates a benchmark between responsibility and awareness in decision making.Similarly, THE TARGET signifies one’s ultimate objective. Coelho advises that individuals should establish their goals in an agreement with their own aspirants rather than external pressure. Therefore, Failure to attain the target should not cause blame to yourself but instead it should work as a reflection of an individual.
Lastly, the theme of Repetition highlights the value of practice conducted with awareness. Repetition of the same error without contemplation causes no benefit. Genuine mastery emerges when one identifies shortcomings and continuously refines them. Over time, discipline evolves into instinct, and exertion becomes effortless flow.
CONCLUSION:
In conclusion, “The Archer” by Paulo Coelho serves as an motivating guide, employing the art of archery to explore profound life principles. Through Tetsuya’s wisdom, readers are encouraged to gain knowledge about allies, maintain balance, commit to intentions, pursue personal goals, and embrace mindful repetition. This philosophical fiction not only entertains but also inspires readers for their personal development, making it a valuable read for those seeking deeper meaning in their existence.
