Unlike his famous novel “The alchemist" , this book is made up of brief essays that explore life, spirituality, human relationships, dreams, and personal growth. Through these themes, Coelho shares profound life lessons that encourage readers to think deeply about their own lives and experiences. About the Author: Paulo Ceolho is a Brazilian writer best known for "The Alchemist”, one of the most widely read novels in the world. His works have been translated into many languages and have inspired millions of readers. His writings mainly focus on themes such as personal growth, spirituality, courage, self-discovery, and the search for meaning in life. Among the 104 different fables, stories, and essays in the book, the following are some of my favourites: 1. A Day at the Mill: This story talks about the importance of balancing modern life with inner peace. Coelho compares the mill, which represents simplicity and calmness, with the computer, which symbolizes the busy and fast-moving modern world. Through this comparison, he suggests that true happiness comes when we can manage our responsibilities while also finding time for ourselves. The story reminds us that in today's busy life, we should not become so occupied with technology and work that we forget our connection with nature and our own thoughts. 2. Prepared for Battle, But with a Few Doubts: This story focuses on self improvement and personal responsibility. The weeds in the story symbolize negative thoughts, bad habits, and other things that stop us from becoming better people. Coelho shows that personal growth is not always easy because sometimes we have to remove things from our lives that we have become used to. Even though this process can be difficult, it is necessary if we want to improve ourselves and move forward in life. 3. Pandora's Box: In this story, Coelho presents the idea of hope during difficult situations. Pandora's Box represents all the troubles and suffering that exist in the world, while hope symbolizes the strength that helps people continue despite challenges. I liked this story because it shows that no matter how hard a situation becomes, there is always a reason to keep believing that things can get better. The message is simple but very meaningful. 4. The Dead Man Wore Pyjamas This story highlights the importance of human relationships and the problem of loneliness in society. The abandoned skeleton represents emotional isolation and shows how people can sometimes be forgotten by others. Through this story, Coelho reminds readers that money, success, and material possessions have little value if a person lacks meaningful relationships. It made me realize that human connection is one of the most important things in life, yet many people often take it for granted. Conclusion: Overall, the stories in Like the Flowing River are short, simple and thought-provoking. Even though most of them are only a few pages long, they contain meaningful messages about life, relationships, hope and personal growth. Coelho's writing style is easy to understand, which makes the book enjoyable for readers of different age groups. I also liked the use of symbolism and metaphors in many of the stories because they make the messages more powerful and memorable. Some stories felt more interesting than others, but each one offered a lesson that made me stop and think. This book is a good read for anyone who enjoys reflective and inspiring literature.
