How AI will revolutionize Western countries that Nepal will still not adapt to
Nepal missed out on the industrial revolution (A warm gratitude towards the Unopressing Rana Regime). We missed out on the great Semiconductor and the Internet Revolution as well. We have our fair share of excuses for every kind of global renaissance that has taken small island nations like Anguilla to earn more from a single internet domain than from its all other international exports combined. In fact, in the year 2022 A.D, Anguilla’s GDP was about 300 Million US Dollars which surged to about 500 Million in a single year. It is a shame that Nepal’s total export from the IT industry’s growth is miniscule in comparison to countries smaller than us. We blame many factors surrounding it, whether it be infrastructure, capital or the most common one “Government Kleptocracy.” But what caused such a menace to commence upon our nation that we continuously neglect the urgency to build the hull of the ship of tech? Let's find out.
The Lies we are fed about AI:
On Tuesday, August 25, 2026, the nation’s beloved Government’s finance minister and the entitled “Sashi Tharor of Nepal” Dr. Swarnim Wagle delivered a peculiar speech (In Nepali Standards) in the finance ministry of Nepal. “To survive in the changing global market due to AI, Nepal needs to pay special attention to 'compute power' and data centers...” he said. Dr. Wagle is a prominent Nepali figure in politics and Nepali education. Having been a former member of the Nepali Congress, he recently switched sides following last year’s Genz Protests. It turned out to be profitable for him as was appointed as the finance minister of Nepal by the Government following a landslide victory for RSP. He is more than qualified to be in that position more than anyone, in fact it would be more suited for him to be the Prime Minister of Nepal (At Least he would have been present most of the time in the Parliament). Criticisms aside, Dr. Wagle is a Harvard graduate, specifically in the field of Public Administration in International Development and has a good understanding of what is happening in Silicon Valley or Wall street and how everyone is nuts on the idea of AI even though it brings profits the size of peanuts. He is still seated firm in the seat of his statement and continues to be optimistic.
Criticisms followed later that day on his plan. Major Journalists and Youtubers stated that this was an artificial calamity on Nepal’s environment and it would destroy everything. They furthermore continued on how these data centers were not economically viable and were going to be the prime cause of Nepal in being more in debt and for these Blue Chip companies to govern our government for us. Some even went as far as calling it “MCC in disguise.” If you haven't found these comments utterly senseless and baseless till now, let me explain why. AI water consumption numbers that say “AI consumes thirty letters of water per prompt you give to chatgpt" are completely false. As Sam Altman stated, your single prompt only sets the environment back about a tenth of a teaspoon back. If you place that drop on your finger, you wont even be able to view it. And for the people who say “Well a fifth of a teaspoon is still very high.” The water cycle is taught in third/ fourth grade. We can easily find out that water is never wasted, it just changes its form and returns back as a cloud. The sort of ‘Woke’ people that call themselves educated and defend these claims haven't even looked back till their third grade textbooks. And if we are talking about water expenditure, Beverage production consumes much higher amounts of water than AI. But why do ‘Woke’ people not protest about wine or their favourite ‘Coca Cola’? These statements are nothing but ropes pulling us downwards from actual technological advancements. These are the same people who keep Astronautical engineers from building space rockets saying, ‘We can save the Earth rather than explore the space for another planet.’ Jokes aside, this is a serious problem that we have to tackle. A hundred years ago, Amish people who believed electricity would keep them away from ‘Jesus’ protested about electricity and condemned it. They still exist today, working on warms and harvesting the fruits of nature. But that doesn’t mean we all should avoid electricity. Today, electricity has helped humanity reach a billion times further than we ever would have. As I would like to quote, “Avoiding Adventure outside makes a person tangled more with problems inside, Exploring ideas satisfies curiosity and even helps to solve problems that you avoided in the first place”
How AI affects education:
AI is more qualified than most of us humans. Unlike the internet where information was purely based on someone else’s pre-estimation and evaluation or approximation for a certain fact that egregiously jeopardized the original intended information paradigm, AI currently does not pulverize the expectations of the social paradigm as it fact checks itself (ignoring hallucinations). Currently, tools like Notebook LM, Chatbot and Notes Summarization apps have revolutionized the current education system, bringing a more two way communication between the AI and the Student. In fact, there is hardly any child nowadays that has internet access and doesn't use an AI learning app (Also counting for copying homework). Due to so many cases of copying homework, some teachers have reported seeing the use of differential calculus in the notebook of a child studying in grade 3. Children have become so indulged in finishing homework quickly that they don't even take a look at what the AI is generating.
AI creates flashcards, quizzes and what not for the ease of the student. Despite all these technological advancements, students take it for granted. While industry professionals should have the entire liberty to research and solve problems by using AI, for children below 16 years AI should be under parental control and supervision only. As we know, the Nepali education system has done a great job raising multiple generations of memory cards. Students who understand hundreds of concepts across eight subjects are completely caught out of the blue by questions related to their field of study. It is because they never tried researching what was beyond a certain point of knowledge provided in their textbooks. It isn’t their fault as well, our education system does a quite good job of unleashing courses so heavy duty and beyond a student’s field of interest that even looking at all the topics in surface level takes days. I am well aware that every single subject is taught to a student to maximise their capabilities and give them a taste of all of the possible subjects so they have a good understanding of what they might expect in the future, it has gotten quite hectic for the average student. We need to introduce a system of penalties and rewards for the students as risk taking and learning from your mistakes is a vital point of life. Simply taking out all the concepts of ‘What not to do’ will largely hamper learning. What I enjoy while programming, chip design and my hobbies is the “Ahah!” moment. The moment you realise what you were wrong about all along. Moreover, students should have the liberty to pick a simple field of study after they graduate from grade four. In fact, even in a mathematics and statistics heavy field like the Stock Market, major mutual fund manager Peter Lynch (a pioneer in Wall Street) stated that all he ever needed was fourth grade mathematics and a good grasp of the market, nothing else. If students realise that a certain field in life would never benefit them, they should have the liberty to switch in this system. The time that they wasted is the penalty that they will suffer.
Even though we have our marvellous education system, we cannot let our peers or children just “Fail” a class do we? How can a simple AI help in that? Well, apps like Notebook LM and others do a great job in quitting hallucinations but are not optimised for country specific and memorization heavy curriculums. It is a niche that no one has explored. For countries like Nepal, attaching your own source material for the AI is very hectic. There should be an AI that knows about your entire curriculum and you would never want the AI to actually solve the entire problem (also in a method you don't recognise). There should have been a platform that did it so AI could actually be used for learning and not just copying answers.
Or is there one? Yes indeed, here is an AI that does exactly as that helps actual learning and not memorization. Yesterday, I stumbled upon an app named IRIS AI that did everything that I mentioned above plus it was really great in understanding topics and sticking to the source material. The app is currently named bhasalearn and works at www.bhasalearn.com/chat. Best part, it is completely free to use. I even found out that it was developed and tested in Nepal so it is also aligned with the BLE, NEB and SEE curriculum. I had a few questions regarding the See curriculum as I am an aspirant. It explained in such a way that I scored really good marks in my terminal exams. If you are willing to try and expand your knowledge, you can visit the website. Enough about AI, now let's get into why the rest of the world will prevail in this new revolution and why Nepal will still struggle.
Why the Nepalese are Incapacitated to prevail in tech:
“A cat would fly at an elephant if it were forced into a corner, but it must be a very small corner into which the Nepalese would be forced before they would fly at the British or cease to be their faithful ally.” –Jangabahadur Rana
The quote written above is a classic example of Nepalese sycophancy for the mighty British Empire. We call ourselves the “Brave Gurkhas” and waive our Concave Pentagon of a flag as if having a differently shaped flag were an achievement. I personally hate the “Brave Gurkhas” title more. The British called us brave because we mindlessly charged at the enemy without any caution, it didn’t help anybody but raised the morale of their "Superior" infantry. I have never understood how fighting literally tanks with a bunch of Khukuris is considered “Brave”? Just empathize towards your enemy. They will only think that you were a mindless brute and not a formidable fighter. Modern combat has shifted the tactics from “I will fight you to death” to “Who will kill whom and from what distance” as many countries nowadays fight wars two continents further than their own country (God bless America). Similarly, we always brag about how we are exporting a billion dollars a year outside in tech as if we had achieved an olympic gold medal (We haven't even won a bronze medal yet). But what do we actually export in tech? Is it an overly powerful software like what Palantir technology makes? Or is it a 3d rendering software like Maya or Blender? We all are extremely wrong. Most of our exports come from Outsourcing or “Making Someone else’s idea into a software” business. It is almost comparable to the local “Chatpate Seller” outside your block. As years pass, we cease to use our pre-frontal cortices. We aren’t thinking. Most of the time we are making someone else’s software and the rest of the time our Startup ideas are “Popo on a Stick” as Kevin O'Leary would call them. And the ideas that have prevailed in Nepal like Daraz or Pathao all originated in foreign countries. The ideas that our country brings up are “Uber for X” type ideas. We don't even know why that group of people actually deserve one app of their own instead of the original app meant for all people.
You know, sometimes it is not always great to blame the Government for everything. While the Government is filled with gooseheads who only want their respective political parties to come in power and once in power to not lose that power. We as the citizens of the country must see what we can do (not including politics). Currently the average twelfth grader doesn't think about a mind blowing idea. He thinks about what nation he will migrate to once he graduates. And so do I and all the people who I know who are NEB or SEE aspirants. While the same young people like Alan Leopole can raise billions of dollars in a Hedge fund while being 24 (And also lose almost all of it), an average Nepali 24 year old is still a barista in Himalayan Java or a waiter/waitress in a burger house. Let that sink in.
The biggest scientist of our country is (unsurprisingly) Mahabir Pun. Can you name any others except him and Sanduk Ruhit that have actually made some contributions recognised globally? Ada Lovelace, Alan Turing, Alexander Fleming, Charles Darwin, Dorothy Hodgkin, Michael Faraday, Peter Higgs, Rosalind Franklin, Sir Isaac Newton, Stephen Hawking and much more to cover from a single country named the United Kingdom which was once listed among the poorest countries in Europe. What they did was not some Astronautical engineering (Rocket Science) or black magic. They thought. That is it, and yet the Nepalese cannot do this simple task of just thinking.
Conclusion:
First there was the Renaissance, then the Industrial revolution, Silicon Computers, Web networking, cloud, AI and thousands more to come. Take my word on it, Nepal with its current mentality will never ascend. We are currently living in the same political system as many different nations (who are developed). Not only stating capitalism, let's look at how communism evolved China and decomposed North Korea. It is not the system that is holding us back, it is the mentality.
