Paulo Coelho, born on August 24, 1947, is a Brazilian author. He is one of the most widely read authors in the world. Paulo Coelho has written many books throughout his life. Some of his well-known works include The Alchemist, Brida, Veronika Decides to Die, Eleven minutes, The Zahir, and The Winner Stands Alone is one of his novels. The Winner Stands Alone was published by HarperCollins in 2008. This story revolves around a Russian millionaire named Igor, who is attending the Cannes Film Festival to promote his business. He is obsessed with his ex-wife, Ewa. Igor is driven by his obsession with his ex-wife, which later makes the story more interesting as it explores and revolves around the theme of success, fame, love, courage, and sacrifice. The story takes place at the Cannes Film Festival. It is a novel that reflects on society’s obsession with fame, glamour, and celebrity culture. The main theme of this book is all about society’s obsession with fame, luxury, etc. This novel also shows the dark side of the fashion industry with the help of the character named Hamid. Hamid was the current husband of Ewa, and Hamid was obsessed with fame, luxury, the fashion industry, celebrities and supermodels. Hamid organises a party where he invites supermodels, celebrities and different fashion designers to flex his luxury and to participate and to show others that he is among them. This also reflects the high-class people's participation and gathering within the fashion industry. Hamid organising this party serves as a platform for socialising, and it reflects the extravagant lifestyle, which can be compared to today's world. This book also explores disillusionment with the fashion industry by showing how people can feel disappointed and unhappy. It talks about how the industry can be very competitive and demanding, making it hard for people to find true happiness. The chapter reveals that chasing fame and success in this world can lead to a sense of loneliness and emptiness. Readers can read this book in order to understand different terms that are currently happening in our society. Paulo Coelho has beautifully explained the true human nature, explaining human behaviour. This book portrays people who are obsessed with their wealth, fame, and power and think of themselves as a great celebrity or a popular person. Coelho’s writing style provides detail and goes into every character's depth. He has also reflected our current society and engaged in some plots and ideas about our society. There are different plots where people can analyse and create their own story behind the plot. This novel contains violence, crime, deep meaning, and different characters engaged in dark actions. Readers who are sensitive about murders and violence are not suggested to read this book. I found The Winner Stands Alone unique because in other books or novels, it emphasises character development, but in this book, different parts which have been classified as thriller and murder mystery. This book concentrates on a murder-mystery setting with different characters, creating a whole new environment and making the story more interesting. The name of the book really shows up at the very beginning and also at the end. We can learn many things from this book, like: ‘There is only you from the very beginning to the end’. Talking about the writing style, Paulo Coelho deeply explores human nature and manages to connect real life with his fictional characters. Paulo Coelho’s writing has inspired and entertained many millions of people around the world. With The Winner Stands Alone, he has shown his storytelling skills to portray the darker side of celebrity, wealth and fame. His talent for writing such fictional books is unbelievable. And Coelho himself has stated this book: “This is not a thriller, but a stark portrait of where we are now,” which can help the readers to understand what this book is really about.
