Introduction

The story starts with Mary Lennox, a spoiled and lonely child living in British India. After her parents die from cholera, Mary is sent to England to live with her uncle, Archibald Craven, at Misselthwaite Manor. She arrives at the large, gloomy house and feels out of place and unwanted. The Book divides into different events. They are given below.

Discovery of the Manor

Mary has a hard time getting used to her new home, and the manor’s servants are distant and careful around her. She doesn't know much about her uncle and is mostly left alone. Mary is sad and stubborn at first, but her curiosity about the manor makes her explore its many rooms and grounds.

The Secret Garden

While exploring the estate, Mary finds a key to a hidden door in the garden wall. This garden, once beautiful, has been neglected since the death of Archibald’s wife, Lily, ten years earlier. Mary unlocks the door and starts to clean up the garden, slowly bringing back its beauty.

Meeting Dickon

Mary makes friends with Dickon Sowerby, a local boy who is good with animals and plants. Dickon helps Mary restore the garden. As they work together, Mary becomes happier and more involved, showing a new side of herself.

Colin Craven

Mary learns about her cousin, Colin Craven, who is kept hidden away in a part of the manor. Colin is bedridden and has been told he will never walk again. He is spoiled and angry, and his presence makes the manor feel even darker.

Transformation and Healing

Mary and Dickon decide to show Colin the secret garden. At first, Colin doesn’t believe in it and is resistant, but the garden’s change begins to help him. As he spends more time in the garden, Colin’s health gets better, and he starts to walk and regain his strength.

Restoration of the Family

The garden’s healing power helps more than just Colin and Mary. Archibald Craven, who has been grieving his wife and avoiding his duties, is drawn back to the manor. When he sees the garden’s changes and his family’s improved health, he is deeply touched.

Conclusion

The story ends with a celebration of the garden’s revival and the Craven family’s happiness. The once-dark manor is now full of life and joy, reflecting the positive changes in its people. The secret garden represents the healing power of nature and the effects of love and care.

Analysis

The Secret Garden shows how growth, renewal, and the healing power of nature and human connection can lead to personal and emotional recovery.
