Movie Review: Clueless

Introduction

"Clueless" is a 1995 American teen comedy film directed by Amy Heckerling and starring Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz. The film is a contemporary version of Jane Austen's Emma, but it takes place in the glamorous, beautiful Beverly Hills, not 19th century England. It’s a mix of comedy, friendship, romance, fashion and social criticism. It's a fun hearted teenage movie yet it also touches on deeper ideas of class, popularity, relationships, self-awareness and personal growth.

Plot

The story follows Cher Horowitz, a wealthy and popular high-school student who believes she is very good at understanding other people’s lives. She successfully brings two of her teachers together and becomes interested in matchmaking. Later, she takes Tai Frasier, a new and socially awkward student, under her guidance and gives her a makeover to help her become more popular.

However, Cher’s plans do not always work as she expects. Tai becomes more popular and starts developing her own opinions, while Cher begins to realize that she has misunderstood several relationships around her. She also tries to match Tai with Elton, but Elton is actually interested in Cher. Eventually, Cher understands that her attempts to control other people’s lives have caused problems. She becomes more self-aware and realizes that she has feelings for Josh, her former stepbrother.

Setting

The film is set primarily in a Beverly Hills, California high school in the 1990s. The fancy houses, shopping malls, nice clothes, cars and school environment are all indicative of the wealthy lifestyle of Cher and her friends. The setting is important because it substitutes the social cosmos of Highbury in Austen's Emma with the social order of an American high school based on popularity.

Amy Heckerling deliberately made Beverly Hills bright and just a tad over the top. That makes the movie hilarious, but it also allows the film to comment on wealth, popularity, fashion and teenage social groupings.

My Favourite Part

The best part of the movie is when Cher starts to realize that she's not as good at matchmaking and understanding people as she thought she was. This revelation produces a huge change in her character. I liked the bits in between Cher and Tai because it shows how Cher makes people her buddy. The humorous dialogue and Cher's confident personality make these scenes especially entertaining.

Relation to Jane Austen’s Emma

Clueless is a Jane Austen adaptation of Emma, very much so. Cher is the new Emma Woodhouse. Both characters are wealthy, intelligent, confident, and interested in arranging other people’s relationships. Both believe they understand love better than the people around them, but their matchmaking creates bewilderment. .

Tai is similar to Harriet Smith, the inexperienced young woman whom Emma tries to guide. Elton is represented by Elton, who rejects Tai and is actually interested in Cher. Josh is the modern equivalent of Mr. Knightley, as he is one of the few people willing to challenge the main character and point out her mistakes. Even Cher’s failed attempt to bring Tai and Elton together parallels Emma’s failed matchmaking.

The differences are primarily in the environment and the social structure. Austen’s is about class and marriage in Regency England; Clueless is about popularity, fashion, dating and social position in a 1990s American high school. This makes the Austen themes easier to translate to today’s teenage audience.

Critical Analysis

What makes Clueless so great is its fusion of comedy and social insight. The movie is supposedly about fashionable teenagers and their everyday problems. But it also shows how wealth and notoriety may change the way people see each other simultaneously.

At first, Cher believes that if she can give everyone a makeover, in looks or in love, she can make their lives better. She can be a little superficial and self-centered at times but she is not spiteful. She learned from her mistakes that you can’t merely control others or change others to meet your objectives.

The film also combines fashion and teen slang to give it a personality. Heckerling isn't simply stealing from Emma, she's using Austen's ideas to create a whole new civilization. One reason the movie is still interesting is because it highlights how things like social position, matchmaking, misunderstanding and self-discovery can be around at different times. Critics have also lauded the film as a humorous satirical take on Emma.

Character Analysis

Cher Horowitz

Cher is confident and stylish and rich and liked but knows nothing about relationships or other people’s feelings. First, she believes she knows what’s best for everyone. But she does grow up a little bit, and does realize her mistakes during the course of the movie. The one thing I liked about the novel was her character development.

Tai Frasier

Tai is a new student, unsure and unsteady. Cher tries to transform her into a “popular girl” but Tai blossoms into her own personality and confidence. Her character is a reminder that being popular doesn’t mean you’re a better person.

Josh

Josh is more serious and practical than Cher. He often challenges her opinions and encourages her to think more deeply. He acts as a voice of reason and helps Cher recognize her mistakes.

Dionne

Dionne is Cher's best friend and one of the most confident characters in the movie. She supports Cher while also having her own personality and relationship. Their friendship adds humour and energy to the story.

Conclusion

Clueless is not just a teen comedy. The film is interesting due to its colorful setting, its humor, its unique characters and the engaging storyline but the link to Emma gives it an additional dimension. The film manages to transport Austen’s 19th century plot to a modern teenage environment without losing the original elements of matchmaking, misunderstanding, social position and self-discovery.

The film’s basic theme is that people should not always presume they know what is best for others. Cher discovers that knowing herself is more important than controlling the lives of other people.Recommendation

I would recommend Clueless to teenagers and readers who have enjoyed Emma. It is especially interesting for students studying Jane Austen since it simplifies the task of finding the themes of the work in a modern setting. It’s funny, it’s compelling, it’s profound and it shows how stories written hundreds of years ago can be made alive for modern audiences.
