How Does Fast Fashion Affect the Environment?
Fashion is about the use of clothing, jewelry and accessories in order to express personal style. It is usually driven by trends and customer satisfaction. Although fashion is a great way of expressing oneself, some fashion trends affect the world. Fast fashion especially is where people replicate high fashion designs, producing them at a low price and generating large amounts of waste and carbon emissions. This is obviously very bad for our environment.
What exactly is fast fashion? How does it affect us? Fast fashion is all about the cheapness that goes into manufacturing, the mass produced, how fast they produce the given mass and the trendiness of the mass produced. It is low priced stylish clothing.
How does it affect the environment? The fashion industries produce mass amounts of clothing in a short period of time with less money. This might seem like a good thing but, all of the clothing produced goes to landfills. Some fast fashion industries include Shein, Zara, H&M, and Forever 21. Shein’s fast fashion model contributes to 92 million tonnes of waste being discarded per year. Temu and Shein are also known for their forced labor on their employees. Due to fast fashion, the employees are forced to produce huge amounts of clothes with small pay and working overtime.
Zara leads to overproduction and massive textile production. They also make their employees work overtime with forced labor and smaller incomes. Although it provides cheap, trendy clothing in large quantities, most of these clothes end up in landfills once the trend has run its course. This leads to water pollution, carbon emissions, and many more that harm the environment around us. Global warming also rises due to fast fashion. Hence, it should be controlled timely so that our upcoming generations can enjoy a healthy environment.
