Axolotls
Axolotls are amphibians, not fish. They are a type of salamander that lives in water. Axolotls have four limbs, gills, eyes, a nose, and a tail. They look like cute baby salamanders and stay in this form for their whole life.
The average lifespan of an axolotl is about 10 to 15 years. Axolotls are carnivores. They eat worms, small fish, insect larvae, fish pellets, and sometimes pieces of meat. Axolotls are not picky eaters and can eat both live and dead food.
Axolotls come in different colors. The main color types are wild type (brown or black), leucistic (pink or white), albino (golden), and melanoid (dark).
Axolotls are found in the wild only in Lake Xochimilco near Mexico City in southern Mexico. One amazing fact about axolotls is that they can regrow body parts such as legs, tails, and even parts of their heart and brain.
Female axolotls can lay hundreds of eggs at one time, usually during cooler months like spring. Sadly, axolotls are critically endangered because of pollution and habitat loss. Therefore, we should try our best to protect and save these amazing animals.
