Exam Pressure and Students’ Mental Health
Examinations are one of the important parts of the education and grading system but excessive exam pressure can seriously affect the students’ mental health. Oftentimes, students feel stressed, anxious and worried during exam time. The constant pressure to score higher marks makes the students fall into the misunderstanding about grades deciding their entire career.
Exam pressure can lead to various mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, sleeping disorder, lack of confidence and so on. They often read for hours without any break resulting in brain camping and headache. Some students also experience emotional breakdowns. The comparisons made among the students lower their self-esteem drastically. There are various reasons behind the pressure in exam time including large number of syllabuses, limited time for preparation, high expectations from the teachers and parents as well as an unhealthy competition among students.
A supportive environment is essential to reduce exam pressure. Our society should value efforts more than the outcomes. At the same time, students need to maintain healthy and fruitful habits such as proper rest and sleep, regular practice of memorising their learnings, developing positive thoughts towards all the subjects, meditation and doing creative works etc.
Exams should be a means to test the children’s knowledge and capability but not as an important asset to decide the future of a child. A balanced and child-friendly approach to education can help students grow and live their life with confidence.
