Safety or Silence?
Safety for women is still not guaranteed in today’s world. From kids to elderly women all face harassment and abuse in different shapes and forms. You know what's worse? It's the fact that the victims are expected to stay silent, fearing the judgement of the society that lands on their clothes and mere existence instead of the actions of the wrongdoer. This type of cruel mindset teaches the victims that speaking up will only bring them shame instead of justice.
In this world, where money can buy a lot of things, silence also comes under that list. People of high society often buy the injustice that is ruled when women with all the courage they have, take matters into the hands of the law. In the medieval periods, education wasn’t that available but we’re living in the modern era now where education is available everywhere. Yet in this “developed” society which is only developed by name, the mindset these people follow is the same as the one people used to follow in the medieval periods. The same unfair traditions, the same unfair judging, why? I’ll tell you why, it’s because of the stubbornness of some of these old people that just refuse to let go of the bad customs, keeping “not letting tradition die down” above all things and moving on to the new generation where everyone is treated fairly and not according to gender, caste, and color. The effects after experiencing such events on a woman’s physical, psychological, and emotional health are devastating to know about. The survivors often suffer from PTSD, anxiety, depression, fear, and trauma for a long period of time. Many lose confidence and live with the feelings of shame and build resentment towards themselves even though they are not at fault. Not only that, the physical effects can include injuries in private or sensitive areas, fatigue, and health issues caused by emotional pain. What enrages me even more is instead of being supported, the victim is blamed, judged, and isolated by her own community. Many women are even pressured to hide the truth from their own family that she grew up in, the group of people that she had recognized as a protection circle telling her to keep quiet about such a traumatic incident just to “protect their family’s honor,”. What honor would the family even be protecting when the goddess-like figure of their family is stripped of her dignity and privacy?
The most heartbreaking reality is that these cruel offenders rarely face the punishment they truly deserve. Criminals who walk around free of charge even have the audacity to tease the victims about the experience, a reminder given to her every now and then of how she will never get justice and be trapped until the day she stops trying. Factors such as weak laws, corruption, and social pressure often protect the guilty instead of the innocent. As a result, women all around the world feel unsafe even while doing the simplest things such as walking alone at night, taking public transport, or working late. The same daily tasks that a man can do without a care in the world, why cannot women? This constant fear only adds more limits to their freedom and dreams, forcing them to live cautiously in a society that should’ve ensured their safety. True change will only come when people stop blaming victims, implement strict punishment for abusers, and create a world where every woman feels safe, respected and free.
