Book: “Like The Flowing River” Introduction: “Like the Flowing River” by Paulo Coelho is a collection of multiple stories that includes the personal experiences of Coelho. Coelho is also one of the most celebrated authors. This book is not like his other famous novels. It contains a lot of individual stories that are inspired all from his travels, real-life events and observations. It is simple but meaningful. This book is based on multiple themes such as love, courage, faith, dreams, friendship etc. Each of the stories contains valuable lessons and can encourage readers to reflect it on their own lives. The title of the book “Like the Flowing River” represents our life. It shows how our life is flowing continuously like a river and the importance of us to embrace changes and learn from everyday activities. He focused on his belief ‘every experience can teach us something meaningful about life’ to write this book. Plot: There are 101 total stories in this book. All the stories are independent and contain different content. The plot of any three stories are: 1. A day at the mill: In this story Paulo Coelho shares some of his experiences of him visiting the mill and observing the process of turning grain into flour. Through this, he reflects the importance of patience, dedication and constant effort. Just like how the mill runs continuously to produce flour, we should also always work continuously to achieve our goals. Coelho also states that valuable lessons can be learnt from ordinary activities and success can be gained from respecting the natural peace of life. This story encourages the readers to appreciate their simple experiences and understand the meaningful achievements that are the result of continuous work and ambition. 2. Prepared for battle, But with few doubts: This story explains about the feelings and fear that comes on the mind of people before facing an important challenge. He also explained that even most prepared individuals experience doubts whenever they are stepping into an unfamiliar situation. He explains that having doubt is not a weakness but a natural part of growth and personal development. The story also teaches us that courage is not the absence of fear but a willingness to move forward. By having trust in oneself, we can easily overcome our life obstacles and continue our journey. This chapter inspires the readers to face challenges confidently and learn from everyday experiences. 3. The way of the bow: In this chapter, Coelho uses archery as a metaphor of life. He has also written another novel named “The Archer” that is related to this story. Using a skilled archer as a character he explains that success is only gained through focus, discipline, patience and continuous practice. The bow represents a person’s abilities while dreams and goals are represented by the arrow. To hit the target, the archer must remain balanced, attentive and committed, just like how people must stay dedicated to their life. This story explains that mastery is gained through continuous practice and not a natural talent. Critical Analysis: The first three chapters of “Like the Flowing River” are based on different themes like growth, self-discipline and courage. In the first chapter “A day at the mill”, Coelho uses a mill to explain the importance of patience and perseverance. Even though it gives a really inspiring message, it overlooks some social and economic challenges that can affect success. However it shows ordinary experiences can give valuable lessons. In the second story Coelho presents doubt as a natural part of facing challenges. This story encourages self-confidence in people. The third chapter also motivates the readers and inspires self belief among ourselves even though it overlooks some social and economic challenges just like the other stories. Conclusion And Recommendation: This book is a recommendable book to some book lovers. This book shows the experiences of the writer when he was travelling. Those experiences really help other readers to believe in themselves. This collection of 101 stories is a really meaningful collection to the ones who love exploring new things and to whom even small experiences can give us an important lesson. This book is a must to be read by all ages as it contains the information for all.
