The Solar System

The solar system is a group consisting of the Sun and the heavenly bodies that revolve around it. Our Earth is also a member of the solar system. There are eight major planets that move around the Sun. They are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Each planet has unique features: for example, Jupiter is the largest planet, while Mercury is the smallest.

In addition to these major planets, the solar system also includes dwarf planets, satellites (which are moons orbiting planets), asteroids (rocky objects found mainly in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter), and comets (icy bodies that release gas and dust).

The motion of the heavenly bodies around the Sun is called revolution, and their motion on their own axis is called rotation. For instance, Mercury takes about 88 days to complete one revolution around the Sun, while Neptune takes about 164.8 years. The length of time each planet takes to orbit the Sun depends on its distance from the Sun: the farther a planet is, the longer it takes to complete one orbit.
