Nirvana
Imagine a band that comes out of the blue and turns the whole rock music environment upside down that became the voice for a whole generation and their music still thrives today. Well that band is Nirvana.
If you are into rock music then there is no doubt that you’ve heard the band name Nirvana. Nirvana is kind of a band that didn’t wear tight leather pants or hosted fancy light concerts but they believed in raw, honest and pure grunge music.
Where It All Began:
Nirvana was founded by the lead singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and the bass guitarist Krist Novoselic away from all the city lights in the rainy town of USA Aberdeen, Washington. Though the guitarist and the bass guitarist were decided it was a struggle to find the drummer for the band. But after a few declinations they found Dave Grohl in 1990 and completed the lineup for the band.
“Nevermind”:
Nirvana’s first album was ‘Bleach’ released in 1989 which didn’t make much in the market. However it did give them a very small fanbase. But then came the year 1991 when grunge music found its legend. The album ‘Nevermind’ out in September 1991 was not a huge deal at first but soon the record sold around the world with 250,000 copies. But this was too small for what was about to come. Then came in the spotlight the single song ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’. The album broke records after records. The album blew up. The album kicked off Michaile Jackson’s #1 spot on the billboard charts. And at the time it was a huge huge deal. Compared to Bleach, Nevermind was different. It sounded and felt different to listeners. Even though played on the radio the grunge, raw flavour of Nirvana never faded. Later it became cleaner and radio friendly. Listeners would listen to songs like ‘Come As You Are’, ‘Lithium’ and ‘In Bloom’ because they could connect and remove their piles of feelings through music.
The music video of the Smells Like Teen Spirit took over MTV and it slowly yet rapidly became an anthem for teenagers who felt misunderstood or were overflowed with anger and rage. This one song made Nirvana a name taken in every household throughout the whole world. Many still believe that Nevermind started a Grunge Revolution in the world. Bands like Pearl jam, Soundgarden and Alice In Chains got the light in the market. By the year's end Nirvana was a movement in the world of music enthusiasts or more specifically rock music enthusiasts.
The Fame:
Nirvana never wanted to be a star. They didn’t want fame and spotlight, they wanted freedom to convert and add what they felt to music. After even the whole world called them legends, they wore ripped jeans, not out of fashion but out of objection to being normal. The fame was hard, especially for Kurt Cobain. Struggling with all the pressure, attention and personal problems all while he was addicted and in a very critical stage of depression.
The final album came in 1993. The ‘In Utero’. Third and final studio album. More intense, emotional than Nevermind and Bleach. People found it very hard to listen and got the signs that Kurt was struggling but fans loved it. Songs like ‘Heart Shaped Box’ and ‘all apologies’ showed the reality of Kurt behind the scenes. It was raw, not polished and shaped to perfection.
The Goodbye:
Nirvana, though very famous and wanted, didn't last long. In April 1994, Kurt Cobain committed suicide at the age 27. His death was the headline for weeks and people were in shock and deeply affected everywhere. Kurt’s reason for suicide was never very clear but what makes more tragic is that he mentioned no was there to blame for his end of life.
Evergreen Nirvana:
Even though Nirvana only released three studio albums the impact on listeners was huge. They changed the course of music history. Nirvana gave a voice to a whole generation that felt lost and ignored. Their songs are still very popular and people still connect to it.
Nirvana showed the world that music doesn't have to be perfect, it just has come from within, overflowing with love and passion for art.
