School uniforms are a basic part of school life for people around the world. The idea of school uniforms is quite debatable. Some parts of the world are not familiar with school uniforms because they never had to wear them. Some even believe that school uniforms limit self expression, but as everything else, this too has its pros and cons. Let’s discuss:

Pros of having school uniform:

The biggest and the most basic concept of having a school uniform is forming the values of equality among all the students. When a student no matter the grade, school level is wearing the same kind of attire it is not possible to determine their economic status or at least not make a perception about them which might be true or might not be. This does reduce bullying and the fear of missing out on style. This promotes more focus on studies rather than focusing about what you’re wearing and how you are styling yourself.

Wearing school uniforms makes the students feel the pride of being in the team. Being the part of the team is an encouragement of teamwork which eventually always benefits the students and school.

Now this is for parents, having school uniforms saves time and money. The effort to select what to wear can simply be deducted if there are school uniforms. Parents don’t have to constantly buy clothes for their child because they already have their school uniforms.

And the most important one, when a student is wearing their uniform it is easier for parents or teachers to identify them. On the other hand, not having a school uniform, the risk of strangers entering school premises without notice is high.

Cons of having school uniform:

School uniforms limit students freedom of expression. Clothes are a way of expression for many. The attire might resemble their creativity and personality. Not having a choice to choose what to wear students might feel compelled and suffocated. And teenagers especially must have a way to express their individuality because it is their high time to decide what they are, want to be etc.

There is no guarantee that the school uniforms are always comfortable and easy to wear. Students might find the material uncomfortable, itchy, too loose, too tight etc. This districts the focus in the classroom and affects their learning.

As mentioned before, school uniforms are said to reduce expenses for parents. This in some cases might not be true. Some school uniforms are really expensive to sew or buy, depending on school protocols. On top of that, the regular growth of the student requires constant change of sizing etc.

Conclusion:

As everything else, school uniforms are both advantageous and disadvantageous. Which uniforms may promote uniformity, it might also be limiting someone’s way of expression. Whether the school may or may not have uniforms the school must have the proper way of teaching different values and different ways to analyse everything.
