The Importance of History
“Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it” By George Santayana.
History is not only about dates, wars, timelines of kings and Queens but instead it is a subject to understand who we are, what, where we came from and how the world has changed over time.
For us, students, history is especially important because it builds a strong base for understanding our society that we live in, our culture that we follow and events of the past that we’ve boycotted. History also teaches valuable lessons that go beyond the walls of classrooms.
Firstly, history helps us understand what we have today. For example, the constitution we follow today, made in B.S 2072 after a long sacrifice. The sacrifices of our parents and their generation. So, understanding the effort of what we have today helps build a sense of understanding and gratitude for our present. If the constitution was not made we would not have the freedom we have today. We wouldn’t be living a life of ease yet. It is a source of connection of the past, present and to the future too. This can help us be more aware, thoughtful and an informed citizen.
Secondly, to not repeat our mistakes. As the quote speaks in the beginning, if we are not learning from our past we are most likely to repeat the same mistake again. If scientists didn’t learn that radio active elements can possibly create death and if they didn't learn from Mary Cury’s death we would still be unaware of the deadly threat of uranium. Not just this, wars, discrimination etc. all create a sense of right and wrong among humans. This makes us believe in right choices even if they take time and make decisions that are beneficial not only for us but for those around us too.
Thirdly, to create values. History is about learning those who stood up, spoke up and made space in the books of legends. If Martin Luther has not spoken up, maybe racism would still be present. If Yogmaya Neupane had not sacrificed her life then maybe rulers would still silence women. If Uma Devi Badi had not risen to the movement, many Badis would still be a victim of great injustice. These are just a few examples of legends. And History, a source of reading the many legends. This is the way of creating new legends and making greater and greater history.
In conclusion, History is also about re-living the excitement and changing present. History is not something that only lives in pages of books but something that runs in blood once understood. That helps build what we become and what morals we want as humans.
