A Lonely Robot on Mars

Imagine playing a video game where your character takes 20 minutes to respond to one of your commands. It would be very difficult to play! This is similar to the challenge faced by NASA's Curiosity Rover, an amazing robot that has been exploring the surface of Mars since 2012.

Curiosity is about the size of a small SUV and weighs nearly 900 kilograms. Since Mars is millions of kilometers away from Earth, radio signals can take between 5 and 20 minutes to travel one way, depending on the distance between the two planets. Because of this delay, scientists cannot control the rover with a joystick. Instead, Curiosity uses its own onboard computer to drive safely, avoid obstacles, and carry out many tasks on its own.

One of Curiosity's greatest discoveries is strong evidence that Mars once had rivers, lakes, and the right conditions to support microbial life. Even today, this lonely robot continues to climb mountains, study rocks, and uncover new secrets about the Red Planet. Curiosity is helping scientists learn more about Mars and preparing the way for future human missions.
