Impact of Mainstream Media of Teenagers
For the longest time television, newspaper magazines, films etc has been one of the most powerful tools of communication in the world. In the recent decade, they have also been joined by their digital extensions. For example, online news platforms, streaming services etc are most popular among teenagers compared to other age groups. For teenagers, mainstream media can be both influential or overwhelming. It has the power to inspire teenagers and connect them with the world but also they can also create unrealistic expectations, stereotypical acts and influence on their behaviours in problematic or negative ways.
Mainstream media can be mainly seen as a source of information and awareness. Especially for teenagers, mainstream media is more for them to learn about global issues and current affairs. It helps them connect with the environment, politics , science etc. Mainstream media also promotes educational programs, science shows, documentaries and other mediums of learning. Mainstream media is a source of inspiration and creativity. Not only teenagers but people of all age groups can learn about their hobbies or gain interest in a certain area. For example, some might be interested in music, others might be interested in arts films, sports etc. Teenagers get the opportunity to learn from influential individuals and motivate themselves to pursue their own dreams and talents. It also helps in the exposure to diversity. Teenagers understand different lifestyles, behaviour, food, clothes and overall way of life.
On the other hand mainstream media also has a lot of needed effects on teenagers. As previously mentioned teenagers are exposed to diversity this also can create unrealistic expectations or standards. Mainstream media also promotes beauty, success and a rich lifestyle. Teenagers can also expect the same things from their guardians. And when they do not get something they want, it can lead to various issues for them and their families. Mainstream media is not only a mode of communication, it is also a platform for advertising. Teenagers are constantly bombarded with advertisements for gadgets, fashion etc. This can lead to a desire in them. This can lead to financial pressure for their families. Mainstream media can also be seen as a medium of entertainment. They are news, movies, documentaries, anime etc. Not every piece of entertainment is violent or gruesome but consuming violent content and sensationising news can greatly affect their behaviour negatively. These types of content can de-sensitize teenagers or any young viewers in general and normalize aggressive or violent behaviour. Similarly the portrayal of drugs, alcohol or any other harmful substances in music and movies can also encourage them to experiment with such substances. Mainstream media can also create a detachment from reality for teenagers. Teenagers might actually be unable to differentiate between fiction and non fiction.
I believe that in the 21st century mainstream media has brought more negative impact on teenagers compared to positive ones. This is because teenagers don't really use mainstream media as a mode of information ,awareness, education, inspiration or creativity. They simply use it for entertainment and timepass. I believe that the positive impacts of mainstream media itself are not really effective for teenagers. If there is a proper implementation of the positive aspects of mainstream media then teenagers might actually be positively affected but due to the consumption and promotion of violent content, unrealistic behaviour advertisement etc teenagers are experiencing more negative impacts on their mental health.
In conclusion I would like to say that teenagers can educate themselves and connect with the whole world using mainstream media but that's only the positive aspect that a few teenagers experience. Most teenagers using mainstream media or experience media must have some sort of negative impacts. They really don’t emphasise on the positive aspects of mainstream media.
