How Should the Education Sector be Modernized?
In today's rapidly changing world the education system is changing too slowly. Compared to other sectors, the education sector has not been able to adapt or modernise to a more efficient or technology based system. Students are still studying in the traditional classroom setup, mainly focused on memorization based studying. Memorization based study does not meet the demands of the digital world that we know. For this reason, the education sector needs to undergo major changes not only to modernise it but to make it more effective for the real world in terms of application.
We live in the 21st century, this is the century of computer technology and automation. Technology itself has changed a lot of fields and sectors using modern methods. Not only in the case of automation. Our daily lives are a lot easier now. These changes itself are an example of modernisation. Modernisation must begin with effective or efficient implementation of technology in any field. For the education field technology must be effectively implemented in teaching and learning processes. We have already seen the use of smart boards tablets and educational softwares to make education more accessible, interactive and personalised. People living in ruler areas who once didn't even have access to education now can get all the materials they want at the click of a button. Not only that, there are lots of educational materials on the internet accessible for free.
The traditional education system should change from a memorization based approach to an approach based on collaborative work, critical thinking, problem solving and skill based learning approach. Education should change over time according to the requirements of society or the world itself. Teaching the same things to different generations will not really bring that much change in people. People should learn about their own surroundings and environment. People should be encouraged to tackle real life problems, people should be encouraged to implement their knowledge in the real world, people should be encouraged to take part in discussions and debates. Students should not only be taught theoretical data or facts, this should be taught to apply them in real world scenarios. Today's students are future citizens. These are the same individuals who will one day run a country. Hence they should be taught about problem solving, critical thinking etc.
Modernisation in the education field should not only come for students. Teachers can also be a part of this process. No matter how much we modernise teachers will remain the same. They will still come to class to teach. At the moment these teachers are all people but in the future they might be AI. Even if it's an AI teaching humans or another human teaching humans, technology can still have a huge impact on teachers and teaching. Let's take an example of Nepal, many teachers still follow traditional lectures, they write something on the board and they talk about a certain topic but teachers can implement things like project works, report works, representation etc.
Nowadays people can study from wherever they want. People can attend international universities, educational institutions etc really easily. But is that really a good thing? Even if students are admitted into international campuses there is still a lot of pressure for them to be in a foreign land. Students have access to all sources of educational materials but what will happen if all students are not equal? People living under poverty or people suffering from disabilities might pursue education differently. For people under poverty, it might be difficult to get access to technology. How will they interact with the education system if everything is modernised? How will they interact with the education system if everything is based on technology?
These are signs that the world is still not ready for all the changes that modernisation can bring for us. Modernisation overall is a really effective and efficient change. But everyone is not in the position where they can accept such changes to a major sector like education. Education should be universal. Education should be equal. A difference in financial status should not bring a difference to education. For the same reason the effectiveness of education may change drastically if a complete modernisation approach is implemented. The government or rather schools should take slow actions in order to change themselves into a modern environment. Everything should change steadily at the same rate that people are able to change themselves.
