Gen Z Movement in Nepal
Generation Z refers to people born between 1997 and 2012 AD. In 2025, they are approximately 12 to 28 years old. This generation grew up alongside rapid technological advancements, including the internet and social media, which have greatly shaped their awareness and activism.
On 8th September 2025, Gen Z protests began against widespread corruption, the extravagant display of wealth by government officials and their families, and the government’s ban on social media. From the beginning, the protesters made it clear that they stood against violence and intended the movement to remain peaceful.
However, the situation escalated when police opened fire on protesters, including school children in uniform. This incident triggered widespread violence and vandalism of government and public property across the country. As a result, more than 2,113 people were injured, and 72 lost their lives.
Following the unrest, Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli resigned, and Sushila Karki was appointed as the interim Prime Minister. She subsequently formed an interim government with the responsibility of conducting elections within the following six months.
Despite the intensity of the protests, the core objective of Gen Z was never destruction. Their aim was to confront corruption and injustice and to protect the nation from individuals who misuse power for personal gain. They envisioned a better Nepal ,not only for themselves, but for future generations as well.
As responsible citizens, it is our duty to vote wisely and ensure that the sacrifices made by Gen Z do not go in vain.
