The Mystery of Jack the Ripper
Jack the Ripper is the one who many people have heard about. It is often fictionalized to be a murderer who rips womens’ body parts apart and is a character (generally fictionalized to be an inhuman creature) in a book, cartoon and anime. Rumours we hear about the Ripper have been going around the world for the past 120 years.
The case of Jack the Ripper is still a mystery in the history of mureder and inhuman acts. Jack the Ripper is an infamous serial killer from the mid-19th century. The murders took place in the Whitechapel district of London in England in 1988. Whitechapel district was an overcrowded place filled with prostitutes, beggars and poor people with an estimated 80000 population then. There were 11 murders in the district in total but 5 of them have been confirmed to be the work of the Ripper Jack. These murders are more commonly referred to as the Whitechapel Murders.
Jack the Ripper was also called the Whitechapel murderer and the Leather Apron. However, the Leather Apron turned out to be a completely different murderer. The name Jack, the Ripper is said to have originated from a letter sent to the press which was then spread widely. Though it is also said that the letter was a hoax written and sent by journalists to spread the story. Another letter that was sent by the presumed murderer, “From the Hell Letter” was sent with a human kidney which is presumed to be of one of the Canonical Five.
The Canonical five are:
Mary Ann Nichols
Her body was found at 3:40 a.m. on Friday, 31st August, 1888 in Buck's Row with two cuts on the throat, two in the vagina and a major cut in the abdomen with other minor cuts.
Annie Chapman
Her corpse was found at around 6AM on Saturday, 8th September, 1888 with two cuts on the throat, her abdomen completely cut with her uterus, bladder and vagina missing.
Elizabeth Stride
She was found dead at 1AM on Sunday, 30th September, 1888 with a single large cut on the neck.
Catherine Eddowes
Her body was found after 45 minutes of Elizabeth Stride’s murder where her body was horribly mutilated. Her left kidney and uterus were removed, she had a large cut on the abdomen and throat. Her face was disfigured, nose severed, two cuts on each eye and many other injuries.
Mary Jane Kelly
Her corpse was extremely mutilated with her throat being cut till the spine, her abdomen wide open with all of the organs missing including her heart.
There are more murders that have been rumored to be the work of Jack the Ripper. However it is still a mystery. It is believed that the Whitechapel Murders ended only after the culprit’s death, immigration or imprisonment.
