Why dost thou flow to defy all measure,

When the heavens of old ordained the decree?

Art thou so swift to bear thy doom?

Doth it kill thee, to uphold the decree?

Incomprehensible, it seems, unto thee;

O, defiant soul, how hast thou spurned the divine?

Thou hast done enough; thy treason shall bear prudence.

Thy err shall meet a painful gust of doom;

Hast all novelty been borne from thy thoughts?

Dost thou wish to rebel, for all in vain?

Hast thou ignored the mandate of the skies?

Doth the divine forsake thine weary eyes?

The words, in sweet accord, shall prevail;

Long live the decree! Long live the decree!
