The Solar System

The group of heavenly bodies containing meteors, asteroids, comets, and other objects is called the solar system. The solar system also includes the Sun, which is at its center.

In our solar system, there are eight planets, arranged in order from the Sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. These planets are divided into two groups: inner planets and outer planets.

The inner planets are rocky planets with a solid surface to stand on. They include:

Mercury – the fastest spinning planet with no natural satellites.

Venus – the hottest planet with no natural satellites.

Earth – the only planet known to support life.

Mars – known as the red planet.

The outer planets are made mostly of gas and are called gas giants. They include:

Jupiter – the largest planet, which can fit around 1,300 Earths, and has many moons.

Saturn – the planet with the most visible rings and numerous natural satellites.

Uranus – an icy gas giant.

Neptune – the coldest planet.

An asteroid belt lies between the inner and outer planets, separating them.

The solar system also contains dwarf planets, including the most famous, Pluto, as well as Ceres, Makemake, Haumea, and Eris. Near our solar system, there are countless meteors, asteroids, comets, and other non-living objects of varying sizes.

So far, the only natural satellite humans have stepped on is the Moon of Earth. The largest satellite in the solar system is Titan, which belongs to Saturn. Interestingly, Earth can fit about 50 moons inside it.

There are millions of facts about the solar system that remain undiscovered, making it one of the most fascinating subjects in science.
