Hantavirus
Hantavirus
Hantavirus is a rare but serious disease caused by a virus carried by certain rodents, such as mice and rats. People can become infected by breathing in air contaminated with the rodents' urine, droppings, or saliva. In rare cases, infection can also happen through rodent bites.
Recently, there have been reports of hantavirus cases on a cruise ship traveling to Argentina, which reminded people to be careful about rodent-borne diseases. (If this is referring to a recent news story, it should be described as a reported outbreak or investigation rather than stating it as the origin of the disease.)
There is no specific cure for hantavirus, but early medical treatment can improve the chances of recovery. To help prevent the disease, people should keep their homes clean, seal holes where rodents can enter, store food properly, and avoid contact with mice and rats.
If you find rodent droppings, do not sweep or vacuum them, as this can spread the virus into the air. Instead, wear gloves, spray the area with disinfectant, wipe it with a wet cloth or paper towel, and wash your hands thoroughly afterward.
Symptoms of hantavirus may include fever, severe headache, muscle aches, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, and difficulty breathing. If someone has these symptoms after being exposed to rodents, they should seek medical care immediately.
