People Around Us

Hello, I am one of the people around you. I bet you have seen me somewhere many times when you were outside. If you cannot remember, then let me assist you. I am the one who rode my bike on the footpath because I did not want to wait for the traffic signal to turn green. I am the one who threw trash on the road because I was too busy to put it in a dustbin. I just wanted to go home, watch the news on TV, and blame politicians for not developing my country.

You may feel confused about why I behave like this, and perhaps you have even shouted at me when I did something like I mentioned earlier. To put it simply, I believe in a rule: “It is right as long as it benefits me.” You can also say, “If it is my way, then that is the right way.”

By now, you might be angry with me. But tell me one thing: Have you never been like me? I am sure you have. You may also have broken rules — not because of an emergency, but because you were too bored to follow them. Sometimes, you even felt it was cool to break them.

In truth, many of us are like this. We break rules when it benefits us, and we blame others when they benefit from doing the same.

So tell me, are you ready to change yourself? Because you are also me in someone else’s story. And I will never change as long as you remain the same.
