The Great Gatsby
Introduction
The Great Gatsby is a famous book written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The story takes place in America in the 1920s, a time when many people were busy earning money and enjoying big parties. The story is narrated by Nick Carraway a man who comes to New York to start a new life .Through Nick, we meet many important characters like Jay Gatsby, who is very rich and mysterious; Daisy Buchanan, who is beautiful; Tom Buchanan, who is strong , Myrtle Wilson and Mr. George Wilson, who live a hard life in a poor area; and the strange watching eyes of Dr. T. J. Eckleburg . People in the story think that Gatsby is as rich as Midas, Morgan, and Maecenas, which means they believe he has amazing wealth. This book shows us a world full of dreams, love, secrets, and the differences between rich and poor people. This book shows how people follow their dreams, fall in love, and sometimes get hurt because of money and lies. It is a story about hope, wealth, and how society treats people differently.
Plot
The story begins when Nick Carraway moved to New York to learn about finance. He rented a small house in West Egg, a place where rich people who had recently earned money lived. His neighbor was Jay Gatsby, a very rich and mysterious man who always threw huge parties every weekend. Many people came to his parties, but almost no one really knew him. Nick became friends with Gatsby and learned that he had fallen in love with Daisy Buchanan. Daisy Buchanan was Nick’s cousin, many years ago. However, Daisy had married Tom Buchanan, a proud and powerful man from an old rich family. Gatsby had spent many years trying to become rich because he always wanted to win Daisy back. Meanwhile, Tom was not loyal to Daisy and was having an affair with Myrtle Wilson, who lived in a poor, dusty area called the “valley of ashes” with her sad and hardworking husband, Mr. George Wilson. In the valley of ashes, there was a big billboard with the eyes of Dr. T. J. Eckleburg, which seemed to silently watch everything that happened there. Nick also saw how rich and poor lived in very different worlds, with Gatsby’s new-money luxury life , Tom and Daisy’s old-money life and Myrtle and Mr. Wilson’s hard life in the valley.
Gatsby asked Nick to help him meet Daisy again, and they secretly met at Nick’s house. Gatsby dreamed that Daisy would leave Tom and be with him forever, but Daisy was confused and afraid to leave her safe and comfortable life. Over time, Daisy and Gatsby grew closer, and Gatsby imagined that he could repeat the past and be with Daisy completely. One day, Gatsby, Daisy, Tom, Nick, and others went to the city, and a big argument happened between Gatsby and Tom. On the way back home, Daisy accidentally hit Myrtle with Gatsby’s car, and Myrtle died. Then, Gatsby decided to take the blame to protect Daisy. Then, Tom lied to Mr. Wilson, by saying that Gatsby had killed Myrtle and that Gatsby was Myrtle’s lover. Mr Wilson gets heartbroken and angry. After that Wilson went to Gatsby’s house and he shot him. Then, he also killed himself . After Gatsby’s death, almost no one came to his funeral, and after that Nick realized that the rich people around Gatsby were selfish and careless. Gatsby had a big dream, but the world he lived in was cruel, and his dream could not survive.
Setting
The story takes place in New York during the 1920s, a time when people loved parties, money, and luxury. There were three main places in the story. East Egg was where rich families like Tom and Daisy lived. West Egg was where new rich people like Gatsby and Nick lived; they had earned money recently and lived in big houses with parties and excitement. The valley of ashes was a poor and dusty area between East Egg and New York, where Myrtle and Mr. Wilson lived. The valley was full of sadness and hard work, and the giant eyes of Dr. T. J. Eckleburg who watched over it. This also shows a symbol of judgment. These places helped show the difference between rich and poor, and how people’s dreams and lives were judged by where they lived.
Critical analysis
The Great Gatsby showed how dreams, love, and money affected people’s lives. Gatsby was full of hope and wanted to be with Daisy again. People thought his wealth was amazing like Midas, Morgan, and Maecenas but his dream did not come true because Daisy chose her safety and rich life with Tom. Daisy was beautiful but weak; she wanted love but could not leave her comfortable life. Whereas Tom was selfish, and he did not care about other people’s feelings. Myrtle wanted a better life but made bad choices, and Mr. Wilson was helpless as well. There was Nick who tried to understand everyone. The story taught that rich people could be selfish and careless, and money could not make life happy. Dreams and love could fail if people are weak, dishonest, or afraid to take risks.
Conclusion and Recommendation
In conclusion, I want to say that The Great Gatsby is a book about hope, dreams, love, and the problems of money. Gatsby had a big dream to be with Daisy again, but the world he lived in was cruel and unfair. People like Tom and Daisy used their wealth so that they would not face the problems. While others, like Gatsby and Mr. Wilson, suffered because of it. The story taught that money could not buy love or happiness and that blindly chasing the past could destroy a person. This book was meaningful, and it made the readers think about what is really important in life. I would like to recommend this book to everyone interested.
