Nepal witnessed a strong uprising by Generation Z in September 2025 when the government abruptly blocked 26 leading social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, for failing to abide by local law. For Nepal's youth, who utilize these platforms for learning, self-expression, and earning, the move felt like an individual attack on their identity and liberty. Reacting, thousands of young protesters, even some in school uniforms, thronged Kathmandu and other cities with spontaneous, party-less demonstrations demanding not just the reversal of the ban but broader anti-corruption and anti-authoritarian changes. The demonstrations snowballed quickly, with security forces employing tear gas, rubber bullets, and live bullets, killing at least 19 and injuring hundreds. In spite of the violence, the protests forced the government to lift the ban and led to the resignation of the Home Minister, a historic and unusual victory for Nepal's youth and a sign of a new political awareness in the nation.
