Smoking is one of the biggest public health issues even when people do medical research. It is the biggest cause of diseases and death worldwide. More than 8 million people are dying daily due to cigarette related illnesses according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
The production of a Cigarette
Cigarettes contain more than 7,000 chemicals and when it is burned and consumed, the toxicity
doubles in amount. Out of all these toxic chemicals, at least 70 chemicals are known to cause
cancer. To name some few of the most harmful are:
Nicotine – it is a dangerous chemical which keeps the user addicted
Tar – A sticky substance that coats our lungs and it is very harmful
Carbon monoxide – A poisonous substance that reduces oxygen in our body
Health Effects of Smoking
Cancer: Smoking is the main cause of lung cancer and is also connected to cancers of the mouth, throat, and, kidney,
Heart disease: It significantly increases the risk of heart attack, stroke related disease.
Respiratory problems: respiratory related problems are commonly found in smokers.
Weakened immune system: Smokers are more of a choice to week immune system
Why Do People Smoke?
The benefits of quitting smoking
After 20 minutes: Heart rate and blood pressure quickly begin to drop.
After 12 hours: Carbon monoxide in the blood normalizes.
After a few months: Lung’s functioning improves and coughing decreases.
After a year or more: The risk of heart disease decreases, and the risk of cancer declines. Despite the risks, many people continue to smoke due to:
Addiction: Nicotine is as addictive as chocolate
Social influence: pressure and cultural norms play a major role
Marketing: In some places, cigarette companies still use advertising to fascinate smoking user’s, especially targeting young people.
