Why is Nepal struggling to embrace New Technology?

Technology is the most rapidly growing market in the world today. Technology has made its place in everyone’s life. Today, it's almost impossible to avoid technology. Regardless of evolving technology, Nepal has lagged behind in this regard in the field you work in. Adapting technology is the best option to date, as it makes our lives easier and has been making a significant impact on our lives directly or indirectly. From sports to education, politics to banking, and even medical science, it is clear that technology has significantly taken over many fields in various ways. While the entire world has embraced evolving technology, Nepal has lagged behind in this matter. Nepal is struggling to adapt technology. In fact, many rural areas of Nepal lack basic technological infrastructure, such as the internet and stable electricity. Even in urban areas, many people are not aware of the principles of digital literacy and cyber ethics.

The lack of digital literacy poses one of the most significant obstacles to Nepal's journey toward embracing the digital age, even in urban areas that have better infrastructure than other regions. The major reason behind this lack of digital literacy is the way we educate about technology. While the world is teaching their students about AI, coding, data science and many more futuristic technologies, many students, even in urban areas of Nepal, have no idea about what “coding” is. In an age where everything changes so rapidly that the things we learn today might be irrelevant tomorrow, it is alarming that many students in urban areas do not understand the basics of technology, which poses a significant concern for Nepal’s adaptation to technological advancements. Moreover, many Nepali people lack knowledge of basic computer operations, safe internet practices, and cyber ethics. The primary reason for this problem is the outdated approach to teaching computer science. Ironically, many large schools in urban areas of our country include computer science in their curriculum, yet they lack proper computer science labs and the necessary facilities for students studying "basic computer science". Another reason for the issue could be that many schools in Nepal lack the necessary resources and infrastructure to effectively teach computer science.

The other reason behind Nepal’s struggle could be the most common root of every problem in Nepal: the government. The weak government policies about many cybercrimes, the computer science curriculum and lack of proper implementation of even those weak policies can be a big issue for Nepal in embracing the new age of technology. Nepal has vague policies that can be a major issue for us to embrace the technology.

To embrace this technology, Nepal has to do nothing but take simple steps. First of all, a strong policy. To tackle the growing prevalence of cybercrimes, we must establish a strong policy. to address the increasing cybercrimes. The condition of cybersecurity is so poor that people are hacking the government sites themselves (e.g., recently the data of the education ministry was hacked and sold on the dark web). Thereafter, the Nepali government should ensure that they make the right curriculum for computer science, unlike the existing ones with 70% outdated content. Furthermore, we should enhance digital literacy. Many old-aged people are not aware of the cybersecurity issues in our country. As responsible members of society, we should help older adults learn about technology, cyber ethics, and the threats posed by cyber crimes.
